As a society we are living longer. One consequence of this is many of us are working longer. This means that many staff will have long term conditions and it is important to manage these conditions well.

For some time now we have been promoting the Access to Work Mental Health Support Service, delivered by Remploy, funded by the Department for Work and Pensions. This service provides confidential one-to-one workplace mental health support for staff. It can be really useful in helping staff to manage a mental health or long-term medical condition that may be causing distress.

We provide a great deal of support for staff which we continue to develop. However, we are aware there will always be cases where it is difficult to get the most appropriate support.

The aim is to support staff along side OH, HR and psychology:

In order to access this service staff must be:

  • In permanent or temporary employment (attending work or signed off sick)
  • Have a mental health condition (diagnosed or undiagnosed) that has caused the member of staff to be off, or is making it hard for you to undertake your duties and responsibilities whilst at work.

Staff who have accessed this service in the past have obtained a range of support including:

  • A well-being plan to help you stay in, or return to work
  • Workplace adjustments
  • Coping strategies.

It should be noted that there is no obligation for individuals to share information that has been discussed with this service.

We all acknowledge that support works best where all parties are open and honest and, ultimately, HR can only advise on the information we receive.
